Online EOTC Learning Modules

EONZ in partnership with the Ministry of Education have developed series of good practice EOTC management online learning modules. These have been designed to support schools to upskill and build the capability of staff in the delivery of quality EOTC.

The Modules

  • Are freely accessible
  • Can be completed in manageable steps at a time and pace to suit
  • Suited to all teachers - school leaders, EOTC coordinators, teachers in charge of EOTC, assisting teachers in EOTC and members of boards of trustees
  • Supplement and provide follow-up and refreshment beyond EONZ EOTC Management PLD
  • Can be used to support EOTC-focus staff meetings, department meetings, and parent meetings
  • Support learnings toward relevant EOTC Qualifications
  • Are fully aligned to the Ministry of Education EOTC Guidelines 2016, Bringing the Curriculum Alive

Development of the modules was supported by the Ministry of Education The original modules were updated in 2022. These updated resources are housed on the Education Learning Management System.

Module 1 Bringing the Curriculum Alive

Key messages

Planning for Education outside the classroom experiences should start with identifying student needs and desired learning outcomes.

Each EOTC activity should have a purpose that relates to the national curriculum.

Module 2 Māori World View

Key Messages

Education Outside the classroom needs to contribute to the Hauora/wellbeing of its participants (students and teachers).

This module provides participants with an opportunity to engage creatively with themselves, others, and the environment.

Module 3 Learning Safely: A Shared Responsibility

Key Messages

Learning and safety go hand in hand. Everyone shares responsibility for quality learning and safety. Remember that principles of sustainability and cultural practices are integral to quality learning.

Module 4 Planning

Key Messages

Planning starts with intended learning.

Paperwork should be proportionate to the level of risk, complicity of the event and be focused on the significant risks.

Module 5 Staffing and supervision

Key Messages

Competent staff and well-defined roles and responsibilities are the key to learning safely. This module explores staff competence and supervision structures to ensure effective oversight of activities.

Module 6 Contractors, Volunteers and Parents

Key Messages

Competent staff and well-defined roles and responsibilities are key to learning safely.

Align staff competence with appropriate supervision structures to ensure effective oversight of the activity.

Module 7 Legal Responsibilities

Key Messages

There are legal responsibilities which everyone must observe. Leaders must be aware of the relevant codes and current good practice.

Module 8 Emergency Preparedness

Key Messages

An emergency plan is essential! You should practice and review your emergency plan regularly.

Module 9 Deities and Guardians

Key Messages

Deities and Guardians: Introducing the Atua Matua Framework. This is a supplement to the existing eight core modules of the EOTC guidelines.
