The Aotearoa New Zealand Professional Practice Journal for Outdoor and Environmental learning

What is Te Whakatika?

Te Whakatika represents the beginning of a journey (to set out) and the process of making corrections (to amend and prepare). As the flagship journal of EONZ, created in partnership with New Zealand Assoication for Environmental Education (NZAEE), it provides a platform for educators, researchers, and practitioners to share innovative practices, case studies and research in outdoor learning.

Call for Articles - Autumn Issue 2026

We invite you to contribute to our Autumn 2026 issue of Te Whakatika. Share your insights on outdoor and environmental learning in Aotearoa.

Why Contribute?

This is your chance to:

  • Promote innovative practices in outdoor and environmental education.
  • Engage with like-minded professionals passionate about learning outside the classroom.
  • Contribute to the growing knowledge of education for sustainability in Aotearoa.

How to Submit Your Article

First:

Before you begin writing, please fill out the Expression of Interest form using the button below. This lets our editor know what you are thinking of contributing (and you can always change your mind!).

After submitting the form, our editor will get in touch with you to:

  • Provide the full author guidelines,

  • Confirm timelines, and

  • Offer support, including a phone chat if this is your first article or if you’d like some guidance.

This step helps us support you early and ensures the writing and review process runs smoothly.

Then:

  1. Write a 600–1500-word article with maximum 5–6 references.
  2. Include 1–5 photos (JPEG format, sent separately from the text, with permission and credits).
  3. Te Reo Māori does not need to be italicised as it is not a foreign language. Do not mark plurals of Māori with an 's'. Use macrons on long vowels or a double vowel.
  4. Format in Microsoft Word (Calibri, Size 12, 1.5 line spacing, A4).
  5. Follow APA referencing style. Learn More
  6. Submit by emailing your work to editor@eonz.org.nz

Submission Deadline for the next edition is: 27 February 2026

If you have any questions at all or would like some assistance with a potential article idea, or writing for the journal, we are here to help! We love contributions from first-time writers. Please reach out to the editor, and they will help or put you in touch with someone who can.

What Happens After Submission?

  •

Submission Received: Article is sent to a reviewer by the editor.

Feedback Shared: Reviewer provides feedback, which may include some opportunities for improvement.

Revised and Finalised: Author may make any changes and resubmits.

Publication: Article is prepared for publication in Te Whakatika.

You get to see your work published (and you can send a copy to your principal or mum!).

Te Whakatika—formerly Out and About—represents the start of a journey (to set out) and the act of making corrections (to amend and prepare).
