Mātauranga Māori in Outdoor Education

Ko ngā pae tawhiti whāia kia tata, ko ngā pae tata whakamaua kia tīna.
The potential for tomorrow depends on what we do today

This PLD is for Outdoor Education teachers wanting to develop their understanding of mātauranga Māori.

  • Participate in a pōwhiri and noho marae/overnight stay 
  • Examine and discuss the new Outdoor Recreation unit standards and the Te Ao Māori concepts within them such as karakia, pepeha, waiata, ngā atua.
  • Explore the local area and hear the pūrākau and pakiwaitara of significant places.
  • Plan next steps of action to integrate mātauranga Māori into your teaching practice.

 

Facilitated by Jane Townsend, Sophie Hoskins along with local experts. 

Kai will be provided. 

 

You will need to bring 

  • Blanket or Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Towel
  • Suitable clothing and footwear for being in the outdoors
  • Suitable clothing for paddling in a waka/getting wet
  • Printed copy of the workbook and a pen
  • Anything else you need for an overnight stay
