Strengthen & Adapt

In 2023 Education Outdoors New Zealand was accepted into the Sport New Zealand Strengthen and Adapt programme. The programme supports Sport NZ partners to improve their capacity, capability and resilience so they can better meet the changing needs of their communities. We are incredibly excited by what this opportunity will support us to achieve over the next three years.

Prior to Strengthen and Adapt, the EONZ Board and kaimahi had begun to consider how the organisation should respond to the changes occurring in education and the increasing diversity of EONZ members and the ākonga in their care. The team also reflected on how well the organisation was upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and acknowledged this was an area needing attention.

The starting place on our change journey has been to refresh the organisation’s vision, values, guiding principles, and strategic plan. Following this, we identified several important waypoints to improve the relevancy, responsiveness, and resilience of EONZ’s mahi. These formed the basis of our Strengthen and Adapt application. Our acceptance into the programme has enabled us to accelerate our change work.

What changes can I expect to see?

EONZ will continue to be your one-stop-shop for Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) and outdoor education support, guidance, and professional learning. We are proud of what we have achieved as a small organisation, and look forward to continuing to support the amazing outdoor learning experiences you provide ākonga.

To support the evolution and growth of the organisation our Strengthen & Adapt project is focussed on the following:

  • A refreshed EONZ brand that reflects the changes to our vision, values, and guiding principles.
  • Redevelopment of the EONZ website so it’s easier for you to navigate.
  • Establishing a professional development evaluation and monitoring framework, to help us more effectively review our workshops and resources and identify new opportunities.
  • Improved membership management system and IT, so our team has more time for their most important work (supporting you)!
  • Streamlined communications to ensure you receive the right messages at the right time.
  • A research-based values proposition for Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) that can be used by EONZ, our partners, schools, and outdoor providers to advocate for sustainable provision of EOTC.

Many of these change projects are underway and we look forward to engaging you in this mahi and sharing the results with you.
