Planning Safe Water-Based Experiences – On-line PLD

This PLD is specifically designed to give primary and secondary school Education Outside the Classroom (EOTC) teachers and educators the skills, confidence, tools, information, and ongoing support to deliver safe water-based programmes and activities across the education and outdoors sector. It is intended to increase participation for all and reduce risk of drowning.

This PLD is supported by Melville High School and Drowning Prevention Auckland.

Course Delivery

There will be a Primary and Secondary School option. Each option will consist of TWO on-line sessions facilitated by experienced EOTC teachers. Both sessions should be attended.

Primary Schools (Y0-8) Monday 25th March and Monday 8th April 2024 3.15-4.15pm

Secondary Schools (Y7-13) Wednesday 3rd April and Wednesday 10th April 2024 3.15-4.15pm

The sessions will be interactive and require some tasks to be completed as you go. Resources will be shared and follow up support from facilitators available.

Using a range of water environments and contexts

Employing inclusive practices and strategies to ensure

diverse ethnic, ability, disability, and sexuality needs are met
barriers to participation are overcome
learning is culturally responsive, including perspectives and practices of tangata whenua

The 15 water competencies and the drowning problem

Leadership, Supervision and Risk Management

Good practice guidelines for water-based activities, including risk assessment
The importance of competent staff deployed in an effective supervision structure that must be robust in a water environment
On Water supervision techniques such as scanning and group versus area allocated supervision
