DIY Camping PLD

DIY Camping PLD

What is 'DIY Camping'?

The 'DIY Camping' PLD has been developed to sit alongside our popular 'Revisioning School Camps' (RSC) PLD. The RSC PLD covers important concepts that help schools develop localised, place-responsive, and student-centred school camps, and the DIY Camping workshop brings these ideas and activities to life. This workshop is perfect for educators who want to develop their knowledge of localised curriculum and how EOTC can support the Aotearoa New Zealand Histories curriculum.

Who is the workshop for?

The DIY Camping PLD is appropriate for all teachers and SLT members from primary through to secondary. We recommend bringing at least one of your colleagues with you. There are no prerequisites for participating in the workshop. However, we recommend that you complete the RSC PLD prior to attending as it will help you to understand the workshop material more quickly.

What will the workshop include?

During this one-day practical workshop, you will explore and engage in a range of simple, impactful, and learning-rich camp activities. The activities you experience can be adapted for a range of camp settings, age groups and learning contexts. Our aim is for you to walk away feeling more confident to deliver some (non-technical) camp activities yourself.

You will learn:

- Ways to maximise your local places for school camp learning.

- How to facilitate safe camp experiences for students (i.e., the practicalities, like equipment and how to manage knife use - even with younger students).

- Strategies and tools to co-design camp with students (from conception through to delivery).

- How to meaningfully integrate camp with other learning.

- A range of fun, simple and learning-rich camp activities that can be adapted for any age group/learning context. (i.e., whittling, mātauranga Māori, weaving, shelter building, fire lighting, foraging, outdoor art etc.).
